What is an Impact Crusher?
Impact crushers rely on gravitational or dynamic physical impact for size reduction of materials such as rock, concrete, clay, shale and more, rather than through a standard compression-only method of crushing. Typically, impact crushers either use gravity to drop material onto a surface, or the material is fed into a chamber containing a high-speed rotor with hammers or blow bars that collide with the material and propels it at a very high force onto breaker plates for further size reduction. This latter method is typically known as dynamic impact crushing. There are many impact crusher machines that utilize variations of these two methods as well.
What is a Horizontal Shaft Impactor?
A horizontal shaft impactor (HSI) is a type of impact crusher used in mining, aggregates, and recycling that breaks rock or other material by using a horizontal blow bar to hurl it against impact plates instead of squeezing it like a jaw or cone crusher.
How it Works:
-
Material enters the crusher from the top or side.
-
A fast-spinning rotor with blow bars (wear-resistant metal bars) hits the material.
-
The material is thrown against breaker plates (impact curtains) inside the housing.
4. The rock shatters on impact, then may hit the rotor and curtains multiple times until it’s small enough to fall through the bottom as product.
Horizontal shaft impactors are typically used as primary or secondary crushers, especially with softer to medium-hard materials like limestone, asphalt, and concrete. These machines excel when you need high reduction ratios and well-shaped, cubical product for use in road base, asphalt mixes, and concrete aggregates. Because HSIs rely on high-speed impact instead of compression, they’re particularly effective at breaking down friable material, removing soft or flaky particles, and delivering consistent gradation with fewer passes through the crushing circuit.
Most of the impact crushing machines manufactured by Williams Patent Crusher utilize horizontal shaft impacting to more efficiently reduce materials into a fine cubical finished product.
What Impact Crusher Do I Need?
Selecting an ideal impact crusher for your size reduction project is determined by the industry you are in, the project scope, and the final product size you desire. In the building and construction industry, an impact crusher is used to create smaller rock particles, such as sand and gravel. In the industrial setting, scrap glass or bottles can be crushed in a safe way to be recycled. The type of impact crusher you need also depends on whether you’re conducting a primary or secondary crushing application (or even tertiary/fine), as different impact crushing machines are more ideal for the various stages of the size reduction process.
